1. Unlike German philosophy - and the idealistc philosophy in general -, which descends from heaven to earth, here we start from earth to reach heaven. This means that we don't start from what men say, imagine and think, or from what they are in words, in thought, in imagination and in the representation of others, in order to get to men in the flesh; we start from men, from their real activity. It is from their real life process that the development of the reflections and ideological repercussions of this vital process are represented. Even phantasmagorias correspond, in the human brain, to sublimations that necessarily result from the process of their material life, which can be observed empirically and which rests on material-objective foundations. Thus, morality, religion, metaphysics and any other ideology, like the forms of consciousness that correspond to them, immediately lose all semblance of autonomy. It has no history, no development; rather, it is men who, by developing their material production and their material-objective relations, transform their thought and the products of that thought with this reality that is their own. It is not consciousness that determines life, but life that determines consciousness. In the first way of considering this issue, we start from consciousness as the living individual, and in the second, which corresponds to real life, we start from the real, living individuals themselves and consider consciousness solely as their consciousness.
